The neck is a mobile area with thin skin, and it is treated differently from flat surfaces such as the back: the skin is stretched and the passes are short, so that the pulse lands evenly on the curve. In women the hair here most often continues the line of the chin and grows for the same hormonal reason, so the neck and the chin are usually treated together. Before starting, the specialist checks whether the back surface under the nape is being treated too, since hair reaches there from the hairline of the head. The laser works by pigment: it takes dark hair and leaves light vellus hair. The area is covered as a course with an interval of 4–8 weeks, because in a single visit only hair in the active growth phase responds.
The practical point of this area is not only smoothness: a collar, a scarf and a bag strap rub the neck, and on shaved skin that turns into irritation and ingrown hairs. As the hair thins, there are fewer reasons to shave, and the irritation goes with them. On average the neck needs 6–10 sessions; when growth has a hormonal cause, the specialist warns about maintenance visits straight away. Preparation: shave the day before or on the day of the visit, for 2–4 weeks before the session no tweezers and no waxing, and the skin must be clean, without creams or perfume on the area. The diode laser works with a cooled tip: the sensation is short warm snaps. Sensitive areas (bikini, upper lip) are noticeably easier to take than waxing. If the discomfort is strong, the specialist lowers the settings during the session itself.
We work through the summer. You must not come with a fresh tan: after strong sun or a sunbed a 2–4 week pause is needed, and between sessions — SPF on exposed areas. On tanned skin the settings are chosen more gently, so the examination is compulsory.
Shave the area 12–24 hours before the visit — the root must stay and the surface must be clean. For 2–4 weeks do not pluck, wax or sugar. On the day of the session — no creams, deodorants or self-tan on the area.
For 48 hours — no sauna, pool, hot bath or sport that makes you sweat. For a week — no scrubs or aggressive acids on the area. Sun — only under SPF. Hair will start to fall out in 5–14 days, and that is normal.
The laser sees light, grey and red hair less well — there is little pigment in it and the result will be weaker; we will say so plainly at the examination. There are also contraindications: pregnancy, taking photosensitising medication, inflammation and fresh damage on the area.
A bundle is better value if you take several areas in one visit: the price is fixed and lower than the areas added up. If you need a single area — take it separately, there is no point paying extra for a bundle.
